Kodak Gallery shutting down July 2nd - Shutterfly buying it

 

I wrote about Kodak Gallery back in February (online photo service that allows you to upload, share, and view your photos from anywhere) and then updated in March that it was up for sale and now it is official that Kodak Gallery is being shut down and be bought by Shutterfly. Kodak Gallery had just announced their mobile apps too.

Shutterfly is an online photo service and social sharing network that allows unlimited images at no cost and at full resolution. Photo Books are their flagship product, which allows people to create photo books with covers, templates and designs.

Kodak Gallery is scheduled to shut down July 2nd and Shutterfly will be buying the business.


On a side note, Kodak Gallery is accessible from school, Shutterfly is blocked as a "shopping site." Thank goodness for 3G on my Chromebook so I could check out Shutterfly.

FreeFoto - thousands of free images to use

FreeFoto is a site with over 130,000 images, organized into 3638 categories that are free to use online. It is easy to navigate with some great images that you can use for free. Schools can also download the web-sized images to use offline in school projects. The images are great quality.

The only thing the site requires is that you link back to the site and give them credit for the image.

Kodak Gallery - online photo service and free apps

Kodak Gallery is an online photo service that allows you to upload, share, and view your photos from anywhere. It is free to join and you even get 50 free 4" x 6" prints when you join.

The Kodak Gallery also has free mobile apps (developed in-house) for iOS, Android and Tablets, including the Kindle Fire. You can upload multiple photos and create groups to share photos.

This could be a great tool for education, sharing photos for projects and school. It also allows you to create slideshows of your photos, with audio.

Pics4Learning - copyright free pictures for education

Pics4Learning is a free site that has thousands of pictures that are copyright friendly so that they can be easily used in education by teachers or students. The photographers still retain their rights to the photos bu are allowing the use of their photos in education.

The photos and images are great for projects, web sites and more.

The images are sorted by category and searchable.

Smilebox Slideshow - free software to create slideshows of your photos

Smilebox Slideshow is free software that allows you to easily create interesting slide shows from your pictures. It is a free download for PC or Mac.

There are a variety of designs and styles for the slideshows and you can adjust the details and pacing and add music, text and videos.

This is a great resource for teachers and students for projects and presentations. It's very easy to use and there is help available.

Public Domain Images

Many students, and teachers, don't realize that you can't just use any image from the internet. You need to sight your source, and in some cases, you can't use the image at all.

To avoid copyright issues and Creative Commons License issues, use Public Domain photos.

Making Teachers Nerdy has a great post on this topic.  It has a list of sites where you can find public domain photos and sounds. I encourage all teachers to read this article and share these sites with their students. They should also talk to their students about copyright issues. In K-12 the students may get away with copyright violations, but the consequences are very real and very severe once they get to college or a job.

Photos8 is a great site on her list that I have seen mentioned elsewhere and I have used. It has great quality photos and a large selection to choose from.
